Rabid raccoon found in Virginia Beach neighborhood

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A rabies alert has been issued in Virginia Beach after a rabid raccoon was found.

Officials say the raccoon was found in the 900 block of South Oriole Drive in the Salt Marsh area of the city Tuesday. It had been involved in an altercation with a dog.

The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Anyone who has had an exposure to any stray or wild animal in the area in the past few weeks should contact their doctor or the Health Department at 757-518-2700 between 8:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Officials ask you not call 911 unless it is an emergency.
