CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Investigators are trying to figure out how a product at a metal recycling plant in the Port Lock area caught fire Wednesday evening.

Crews with the Chesapeake Fire Department responded to an alarm around 7 p.m. for an industrial fire at Sims Metal Management at 4300 Buell Street, according to Battalion Chief Mike Thibeault.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke coming from an above ground conveyor belt system. They were able to open it up and find a product on the belt on fire and smoldering, Thibeault said.

The flames were extinguished with fire fighting foam, and the fire was ruled under control about 30 minutes after crews arrived at the scene.

Thibeault said the cause of the fire is not suspicious, but a deputy fire investigator has been called to review the scene and narrow down exactly what caused the fire.

No one was injured and the fire was confined to a small are of the plant.
