Victim describes York County robbery

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the man who robbed a York County gas station.

The robbery happened April 16 at the Exxon gas station in the 3100 block of Big Bethel Road in the Yorktown area.

Cashier Jennifer told WAVY.com she was one hour into her eight-hour shift that Wednesday when a man walked in, said hello, then pulled out a handgun.

“He was pointing the gun, he said, ‘open the register.’ I say, ‘okay, okay.’ So I opened it and I gave him everything I had,” Jennifer said. “He was telling me, ‘give me this, give me this. Give me the fives. Give me the ones.’

She put the money on the counter and says he then asked for cigarettes: “I reached for as many as I could with one hand, but I was trying to keep an eye on him, and I put them on the counter.”

After that, he issued a stern warning before leaving.

“He used curse words. He said, ‘don’t you dare call the cops. You give me 30 seconds.’ I said, ‘I promise. I won’t say anything,’ and then he just went out the door,” Jennifer said.

It left Jennifer so scared and sad she locked the doors: “I was crying, shaking. I couldn’t breathe because it was so much.”

Police were eventually called, but Jennifer says she still has flashbacks of being held up at gunpoint.

“I know there are worse things out there, but everybody has their way they feel, but he doesn’t know how much he destroyed me right now,” she said.

The emotional toll has her looking over her shoulders whenever she goes out. Her hope is that the suspect is soon caught.

The suspect was described as a white male standing about 6′ and weighing 200 pounds. He has a brown beard that looks to be kept neat and was armed with a black and silver handgun. An employee said the suspect ‘talks street.’

The ATF is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest.  Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-ATF-TIPS or the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office at 757-890-3621.
