NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Quite simply, it was the Monarchs’ night. The Old Dominion University baseball team took down the University of Virginia 8-1 at Harbor Park on Tuesday night, and became the first team in ODU baseball history to beat the nation’s top-ranked team.
The Monarchs’ eight runs came on nine hits, while the Cavaliers- normally one of the country’s best defensive teams- committed four errors and only produced four hits.
ODU (27-18) trailed 1-0 after the top of the 2nd inning, then scored twice in the bottom half, twice sixth and sealed the win with four runs in the eighth. ODU redshirt junior Brett Harris, who played his high school ball just down the road at Hickory in Chesapeake, pitched five innings and gave up three hits and the only run of the night to get the win.
