NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a Newport News woman was stabbed to death by her husband Monday afternoon.
The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. at the Sherwood Arms Apartments in the Denbigh area. Harold Eley with Newport News Police said the 23-year-old victim was alive at the scene, but died around 2:30 p.m., after she was transported to a local hospital.
The woman has been identified as Jamila Adam of Colony Road.
Police say Adam went the apartment complex to visit two men who were her friends. 10 On Your Side talked to the men, but they only speak Arabic, so neighbor Emmanuel Longoro translated what happened.
“She came here needing one of the guys to take her to the bank,” Longoro said. “Her husband followed her here. They didn’t know what was going on.”
Inside their apartment, the men said Adam and her 49-year-old husband got into an argument.
“The guy came in and asked her why did she stayed here an hour and a half,” Longoro said.”The lady suspected something and she ran out.”
The men say Adam ran from the apartment and her husband followed her with a knife.
“Her husband followed her here,” Longoro said. “They didn’t know what was going on until the lady saw the man come in with a knife, so she ran out.”
Police say Adam was assaulted and stabbed by her husband before being found outside the apartment complex with stab wounds.
Officers located and detained a man matching the husband’s description near the scene. He was questioned, and Eley said Barharadin Omar Juma of Colony Road was arrested and charged with murder and use of a knife in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Newport News City Jail without bond.
Friends say Adam moved to the states from Sudan just months ago, and they are heartbroken over her loss. They say she leaves behind three yound children.
“You can see he is crying because it is touching,” Longoro said. “It’s something very, very, terrible, very terrible.”
