Fire crews responded to the 600 block of Ellen Road at 4:39 a.m., and found the church engulfed in flames when they arrived.

A fire department spokesman told WAVY.com two additional engines were called to the scene to help fight the flames. The roof of the building collapsed before firefighters could put out the fire.

Battalion Chief Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department said crews remained on the scene until late Sunday afternoon putting out hot spots.

The church was condemned. Due to the extensive damage, Pincus said investigators have not yet been able to determine how the fire started.

No injuries were reported.
