Vacant house catches fire in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Crews battled a fire at a vacant home in Newport News Tuesday night.

Battalion Chief Jack Carper with the Newport News Fire Department told WAVY.com firefighters were dispatched to a home on 29th Street around 11:45 p.m. There, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the second floor.

Inside, firefighters found a fire in an upstairs bedroom. It took crews about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

The home was vacant and an investigator was called to determine the fire’s cause and origin. The incident remains under investigation.
