PASQUOTANK COUNT, N.C. (WAVY) — A toddler almost drowned in North Carolina Tuesday after wandering onto the deck of an above ground pool.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright said the incident was reported around 6:30 p.m. at a residence in the 100 block of Matthews Drive. A gate was left open, and a 21-month-old boy wandered onto the deck and fell into the pool, which had a cover on it. Rain water had accumulated on top of the cover, Cartwright said.

The boy’s father found the child, who was not breathing. He pulled him from the pool and began CPR. The child was transported to Albemarle Hospital and stabilized, then flown to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Cartwright said the boy remains in critical condition. No charges have been filed.
