NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are asking for help identifying people involved in check fraud in Newport News.

Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said several people went into Tracy’s Restaurant located at 3500 Huntington Ave. and chased counterfeit 1st Marine Corporation checks. It happened on March 28 between 3 p.m. 3:45 p.m.

Two additional people tried to cash the same payroll checks, but were declined by the restaurant. Eley said on April 4, another person tried to cash a 1st Marine Corporation check, which was also declined.

The counterfeit checks contained fake payee names and Social Security numbers, according to Eley.
