Tides lose series finale with Bulls 6-5 in extra innings

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Durham’s Robby Price plated a run with a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning to help the Bulls edge Norfolk 6-5 Monday afternoon at Harbor Park.

With the score tied 5-5, Mikie Mahtook started the 10th inning rally with a leadoff single off of Kelvin De La Cruz (0-2). After a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base moved Mahtook to third, Price blooped a two-out single into center field to plate Mahtook and give the Bulls the lead.

The Tides went in order in the last of the tenth against Bulls closer Kirby Yates, who yielded two deep fly ball outs but earned his league-leading seventh save of the season. Doug Mathis (1-0) earned the victory in relief by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Julio Borbon hit a solo homer and drove in another run with a double to help pace Norfolk’s season-high 11-hit attack. Henry Urrutia singled three times in the contest, while Alexi Casilla added two hits and two runs scored.

Tides starter Eddie Gamboa allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. Gamboa struck out four without walking a batter as he threw 64 of his season-high 93 pitches for strikes.
With the loss, Norfolk (5-13) dropped to 0-7 in one-run games this season.

The Tides head to Lehigh Valley Tuesday to open a four-game series with the IronPigs. First pitch from Coca-Cola Park is slated for 7:05.
