GLOUCESTER COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Dominion Virginia Power finished installing the largest rooftop solar system in Virginia, just in time for Earth Day.
Spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris said the company put more than 2,000 solar panels on the roof of the Canon Environmental Technology facility in Gloucester and held a dedication ceremony on Tuesday.
The facility will generate more than 500 kilowatts of electricity — enough to power about 125 homes. And all that electricity will flow to the electric grid to be used by Dominion customers.
The $2 million project will also help Dominion learn about how to best expand solar energy opportunities, Harris said.
It’s all part of the company’s Solar Partnership Program, which plans to construct up to 30 megawatts of company-owned solar facilities on leased rooftops or on the grounds of commercial businesses and public properties across the state.
Harris said the program’s goal is to eventually generate enough power for 7,500 homes.
