SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Smithfield native Bria Kelly performed a rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” on the first Live Show of NBC’s The Voice Monday night.
As season six moved into the Live Shows, threatening to eliminate two contestants each week, Kelly took on the first contemporary record she’s performed during the competition.
Judge Blake Shelton said Kelly’s performance brought a “rock edge” to the soulful ballad, and all four judges praised her for attempting what they described as a challenging song choice.
“I have to say that taking on an Adele song is really a challenge because her voice is so unique, but if anyone could do it, it was you,” Shakira said. ” … I love it when you get all fierce like that.”
Kelly’s only critique came from judges Adam Levine and Shakira, who both wished Kelly picked a higher key.
“It is a tall order, that’s a dangerous one, it takes a lot of courage, but you’re definitely a candidate for being able to knock that out,” Levine said. ” … I selfishly wanted to hear that in a higher key … but it was a great job, though.”
Shelton noted the lower key likely enabled Kelly to hold one particular note for an impressive length. Kelly’s mentor and coach gave her only praise.
“I felt fire in your voice, and you killed it … You were connected, you gave me the energy I asked for, and you gave a great performance,” Usher said.

The three artists with the lowest number of votes will be eligible for the “Instant Save” during the live results show Tuesday night. The artists will each perform a new song, and then America will vote to save their favorite performer by tweeting out #VoiceSave along with the artist’s name.
The Top 10 contestants will be announced at the conclusion of Tuesday nights’ episode, and two contestants will be eliminated each week until winner is announced May 20.
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on WAVY-TV 10.
