CHOWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Police say a man accidentally drowned in the Edenton Bay Monday morning.
Edenton Police Chief Jay Fortenbery said Chowan Central Communications received a 911 call around 10:30 a.m. about a possible drowning in the bay, near the intersection of S. Granville and W. Water Street.
Officers, sheriff’s deputies, the U.S. Coast Guard and other rescue crews responded and began searching for the victim. Just after 12 p.m., the victim was located and taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
He was identified as 49-year-old David Earl Hassel of Edenton.
Fortenbery said the incident was accidental, that Mr. Hassel waded into the water to retrieve a remote control toy boat before he drowned.
No further information has been released.
