ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a shots fired incident that happened early Friday near an Elizabeth City church.
Eddie M. Buffaloe, Jr. with the Elizabeth City Police Department said officers were dispatched to Cypress Street and North Road Street at 1:45 a.m. Callers had told police about nine to 12 shots were fired in the area.
Buffaloe said officers found 11 spent 9mm casings behind Blackwell Memorial Church. The casings were found heading from the parking lot onto Cypress Street, and then into the street. Police found two other bullets in the road at the intersection of North Road and Cypress streets.
Police searched the area for damage, but did not find any. Buffaloe said investigators found fresh tread marks nearby, indicating that a vehicle had sped away from the area.
Police learned from a witness that three males were standing in the church parking lot when a sedan drove past. The witness said one of the males ran out and shot at the sedan, which took off along West Cypress Street. Buffaloe said the witness also told police the car’s rear window was shot out.
