NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – No injuries were reported after a fire Friday at a Norfolk State University residence hall.

Battalion Chief Julian Williamson with Norfolk Fire and Rescue said the fire was at Babbette Smith Hall, a high-rise student residence, in the 700 block of Park Avenue. Units on scene reported light smoke showing upon arrival.

The fire was inside one of the dorm rooms, Williamson said, which was evacuated. Stan Donaldson with NSU said the fire was contained quickly and no one was hurt. The evacuated students were sent to other residence halls across campus.

Donaldson said there was minor water damage to the building and  that students were expected to return to the residence hall within 4 hours.

Williamson said the third, fourth and fifth floors are uninhabitable, but the building was not fully occupied and residents may be able to be relocated to other floors.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
