SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach woman died after she jumped from a moving car and fell off a bridge in Isle of Wight County Friday night.
Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Sidney Hazelwood Bridge on Rt. 17 around 8:40 p.m. after receiving reports that a person jumped off the bridge.
According to to spokeswoman for the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s office, the investigation into the incident revealed that the woman was a passenger in a car with her boyfriend when she suddenly jumped from the moving vehicle, then fell off the bridge in to the shallow water below.
Deputies arrived on the scene and found a Nissan stopped on the bridge along with skid marks consistent with an emergency stop.
Rescue crews recovered the body of the 25-year-old woman, which was sent to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department said the woman had a recent history of a psychological disorder.
The investigation also revealed there was no sign of homicidal activity and no charges are expected.
Earlier reports from the Coast Guard that indicated the woman fell into the water following a crash were inaccurate.
