Virginia Beach suspects charged in N.C. bank robbery

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Two suspects from Virginia Beach were charged after a bank robbery in North Carolina Thursday evening.

Minutes before 5 p.m., the Camden County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 call about an armed robbery at the Towne Bank of Currituck at 178 West US 158, according to Sheriff Tony Perry.

Witnesses said an armed woman wearing a wig showed a demand note and took cash then ran behind the bank, down the street behind the ShoreFlyte dry dock boat repair facility, Perry said. When deputies searched they area, they located the woman with the cash hiding in a boat.

The woman, 31-year-old Athena Lau Yancey of Virginia Beach, was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Perry said an additional suspect, 24-year-old Jesse Lee Baker of Virginia Beach, was arrested and charged with aid and abet robbery with a dangerous weapon. Perry said Baker was driving a vehicle parked down the street.

“Deputies were quick on this one, and I am certainly proud of their efforts,” Perry said.

Both suspects were placed in the Albemarle District Jail under $350,000 secured bonds.
