NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- Cold weather has forced the Conference USA Women’s outdoor Tennis Championship indoors, but that’s no problem when you have one of the nicest indoor facilities in the nation. “The Folks-Stevens Indoor-Outdoor facility is one of the nicest in the nation. It’s a world-class facility. We put in a bid to host the Conference USA Tennis Championships. We did not care if we got the men’s or women’s. We were awarded the women’s championship and think that with the facilities that we have here at Old Dominion on an annual basis, we should be able to host either the men or women and showcase women throughout Hampton Roads,” says ODU Athletic Director Wood Selig.
Seeded 7th out of 16, the Monarchs, in blue faced Tulane today. The Monarchs forced the match to doubles before taking the win. In doing so, ODU advances to Fridays quarterfinal match with number 2 seed Rice. Head coach Dom Manilla could not be happier with his team’s performance on their home court. “To be hosting and to have a match come down to doubles like this is just incredible. It is an opportunity that I can’t explain right now. This is one of the most exciting matches I have ever been a part of and I played here so this is great for the Monarchs, this is great for Old Dominion,” said Manilla.
All 16 Conference USA schools are represented this week in Norfolk. It is a 5 day single elimination tournament with the championship to be played Sunday. Selig says hosting this championship may become a regular part of the ODU sports schedule. “Tulsa is leaving the conference with Tulane and East Carolina after the conclusion of the season so that should position Old Dominion as the nicest indoor-outdoor facility in Conference USA so as long as we put a bid in we will be selected to host either the men or the women’s championship on an annual basis,” added Selig.
Play will begin Friday morning at 10:00am and it is free to the public.
