VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It’s been seven years since a gunman opened fire on Virginia Tech’s campus, and on Wednesday many across the state remembered those lost, even in Hampton Roads.
At the stroke of midnight, the Hokie community started its annual Day of Remembrance, first by lighting the ceremonial candle and then by reading aloud the names of those killed. For each victim, a minute of silence from the Corps of Cadets — 32 in all.
We lost two local students that day: Nicole White, a graduate of Smithfield High School, and Lauren McCain from Hampton.
One of the somber services that took place across the state occurred Wednesday evening in Virginia Beach. The Hampton Roads Virginia Tech Alumni Association held a memorial at 6 p.m.
