Driver charged after hit-and-run with homeless man

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police have charged a man in the investigation of a hit-and-run crash that injured a homeless man last month.

Darrell Keith Nelson, 56, was arrested at his Hampton home around 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Holly McPherson with Newport News Police. He was charged with felony hit and run and reckless driving in connection to an auto-pedestrian crash on March 7.

Police say Nelson was driving a white pickup truck when he hit a homeless man at the intersection of 74th Street and Jefferson Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Surveillance video showed the truck dragging the man a short distance before turning onto Jefferson Avenue. Police say Nelson kept going, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the victim survived his injuries after a hospital stay of at least four days.
