NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – An 18-year-old woman was shot in the face in Newport News early Tuesday morning.
Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department said officers were called to the Aqua Vista Apartments, on Aqua Vista Drive, around 1 a.m. There, they found the teen had been hit by a bullet in the face.
Neighbors woke up to the flashing police lights and officers going door to door, looking for witnesses.
“That’s when I came outside, and I asked the officer what was going on,” said Raymond Hawkins, who lives in the building next door to the shooting. “He informed me that a young girl got shot.”
Police say the 18 year-old was in an apartment when hit by the bullet. They believe someone fired a gun from the apartment next door and the bullet traveled through the wall, hitting the victim.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, but police say she had to be moved to a Richmond hospital due to the nature of her injuries. A family friend told WAVY.com the victim was still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.
Hawkins is used to the sound of gunfire in the neighborhood, although, never coming from the inside of one of the homes.
“If it can happen to her, it can happen to me or my neighbors,” Hawkins said.
Thurston said police are still investigating the shooting. Several people have been interviewed, but investigators are seeking more witnesses. Charges are still possible with this case. Thurston said whether the victim was targeted or accidentally shot is still under investigation.
