Driver charged with DWI in NN building crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A vehicle went sailing into a building after hitting a light pole in Newport News early Monday morning and the driver is facing several charges.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the 10000 block of Warwick Boulevard. Preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling southbound and hit a utility pole.

Police say the driver lost control, crossed the median at Shirley Road and crashed into Village Groomer and Pet Supply located at 10604 Warwick Blvd.

The driver, James Addison DuRant of Newport News, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. DuRant, 21, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
