Man drowns on the Eastern Shore

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – State Police are investigating a drowning on the Eastern Shore.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said troopers were asked by deputies in Northampton County to assist with a report of a possible drowning around 1:20 a.m. The incident occurred at 2175 Morleys Wharf Road in the Wardtown area.

Witnesses said Troy S. Tankard of Nassawadox entered the water to get his car keys that had been thrown in earlier along with his wet clothing. He never resurfaced.

Just before 9 a.m., Tankard’s body was located about 20 feet from the fishing pier. Anaya said his death is being treated as an accidental drowning with no signs of foul play.
