Cab driver found unconscious in driveway

COLINGTON ISLAND, N.C. (WAVY) – The Dare County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday it was investigating the possible assault of a cab driver on Colington Island.

Around 1:30 a.m., Dare County 911 received a call for an unconscious man down in a driveway at a residence on Harbour View Drive in Colington Harbour. Deputies and units from Dare County EMS and the Colington Fire Department responded.

Neighbor Jay Golliday said he saw the man on the ground when he got home early Sunday morning.

“People over there came and helped him,” Golliday said. “They were trying to ask him what his name was, trying to get him to pay attention.”

According to Lt. Kevin Duprey, Mark Harvey, 53, of Kill Devil Hills was scheduled to pick someone up in the Colington Harbour neighborhood an hour earlier, near where neighbors found him, but he never made it there. He said Harvey works for Atlantic Cab Company. Employees from the company declined to comment Sunday.

“Neighbors heard what they thought was possibly a crash of a couple vehicles that would have been in the driveway, so they walked over to see what would have happened a short time after that and found Mr. Harvey unconscious laying on the concrete,” Duprey said.

Harvey was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital, then to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Deputies said Sunday night he was in critical condition.

“At this point, we don’t know exactly what happened, and if it was an assault, we want to solve that, and if it was a medical condition, we want to find out for the family too, to get the information we need to find out what happened to Mr. Harvey,” Duprey said.

Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the Dare Sheriff’s Office at 252-473-3444.
