WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – Nine people were displaced after a fire at an apartment complex in Williamsburg late Sunday night.

Eric Stone with the Williamsburg Fire Department said the fire sparked around 10:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Apartments located at 518 York Street.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the roof area. Everyone inside was able to get out on their own.

The fire was in the attic area of one apartment and was brought under control quickly, Stone said.

Six adults and three children were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by Williamsburg Human Services and the American Red Cross.

Stone said it looks as though the fire started on the HVAC system and went up into the attic.
