Admirals push past Pirates in shootout, stay in playoff hunt

PORTLAND, ME (WAVY) – Jessee Blacker sealed the Norfolk Admirals’ 3-2 road win with a goal in the sixth round of a shootout against the Portlant Pirates on Sunday afternoon.

Emerson Etam’s 22nd goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, while left wing Nic Kerdiles scored his first of the year to give the Admirals a 2-1 lead in the second. Norfolk allowed Portland to tied the game at 2-2 with just :05 seconds left to play.

Brad Thiessen played well in the net for Norfolk, saving 32 of 34 shots on goal, including all six in the pivotal shootout.

The win is huge for the Admirals, who now keep pace with Hershey in the playoff push. Hershey also won in overtime, after a 1-0 victory over Binghampton. Both Norfolk and Hershey share identical records at 38-25 and identical point totals at 86 each.

Now the two will meet for a two-game set that will, in all likelyhood, decide who earns the eighth and final spot in the playoffs. Hershey and Norfolk will meet at Scope in Norfolk on Wednesday at 7:15.
