NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A four-run fifth inning and a comfy 7-4 lead wasn’t enough for the Old Dominion University baseball team, who gave up late scores and, eventually, a 12-7 win to conference foe East Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
Down 4-3 to start the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Monarchs quickly took back the lead with a 2-run blast from senior first-baseman Josiah Burney. His home run gave ODU a 5-4 lead. The Monarchs added two more runs in the same frame to establish that 7-4 cushion.
ODU, though, gave up a solo home run in the eighth that cut their lead to 7-5, and surrendered two more in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. ODU’s bend-but-don’t-break pitching that evening finally broke, and the Pirates put five runs on the board in a decisive 12th inning.
The Pirates out-hit the home Monarchs 22 to 11.
Even with the loss, ODU still won the weekend series two games to one and heads to Williamsburg on Tuesday for a battle with former CAA rival William & Mary at 7:00 pm.
