PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – More than 200 volunteers gave downtown Portsmouth a spring cleaning Saturday morning
The event is called The Great American Cleanup. Last year, volunteers picked up nearly 5,000 pounds of litter from downtown streets.
The Portsmouth chapter of Jack and Jill of America brought 20 volunteers.
“It’s part of our organization, our civic responsibility, to give back to the community,” said Latanya Gray, president of the Portsmouth chapter. “We’re getting into the summer, so people are going to come and visit Tidewater area and hopefully downtown Portsmouth, will be part of that.”
The City also let people drop off electronics and hazardous waste and shred paperwork for free.
