NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The man accused of fatally shooting a student after a high school football game in 2012 was convicted of the crime Wednesday.

Carnell Vaughn, 20, was convicted of second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony during a two-day bench trial in Norfolk Circuit Court, according to Amanda Howie with the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

The conviction is related to the shooting death of 18-year-old Davide L. White on September 28, 2012 in the 1300 block of Goff Street. He was killed near Booker T. Washington High School after attending a football game there against Lake Taylor High School, where he was a senior.

Howie said the Commonwealth’s evidence proved Vaughn shot into a crowd and did not intend to hit White, who was his friend.

Vaughn will be formally sentenced on July 25.
