Clerk with gun scares off would-be robber

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police need help identifying a man who tried to rob a gas station at gunpoint over the weekend.

The crime occurred Friday just before midnight at the Exxon gas station located at 14793 Warwick Blvd.

Officer Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said surveillance video showed the suspect enter the store, display a handgun and then quickly run away. The clerk had his own handgun and upon seeing the suspect armed, pulled out his own weapon.

The suspect is described as a bi-racial light skinned male in his 30s standing 5’3” to 5’4”. He was wearing a black knit cap, white rag or shirt over his face, dark jacket, jeans and brown work-style shoes.
