NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police officers in Newport News arrested a man after they discovered two children in a potentially dangerous situation.

The children were on a boat at Leeward Marina visiting their father. Officers got a call from a concerned individual the morning of April 7 to check on their welfare. Officers arrived to find a 7-year-old boy wearing only a jacket. His clothes were soaked with urine and he didn’t have a change of clothes, according to police spokeswoman Holly McPherson. There was also a gun on a table, within reach of the boy and his 5-year-old brother, police said.

Victor Jackson, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts child neglect.

The children are in the custody of their mother.
