NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk principal was named a National Distinguished Principal this week.
Lauren Campsen, Ocean View Elementary School Principal, was recognized by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals after being nominated by her peers. She was presented with the award at the Norfolk school Tuesday, and WAVY.com talked with her moments after the big announcement.
“I’m feeling amazed. This is such a great honor. As I said before, it’s … to do something you love, to be able to get up and come in and do something that you love every single day, which is working with children, and then to get a special honor for it, it’s icing on the cake,” Campsen said.
Campsen’s staff and her students’ parents were interviewed about her leadership by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals as part of the process of her being selected.
“With her dedication to children and to this community, Lauren Campsen has helped make Ocean View Elementary a true Norfolk treasure,” Mayor Paul Fraim said. “She will always tell you that it is her staff, her families and her community partners who make the difference, and we know that they are vital to the success of Ocean View. But Ms. Campsen is the glue that holds all of the successful pieces together, and we thank her very sincerely for her service to our city and to our children.”
“This is possible because I have the best, hardest-working staff in the world, and we have the best students in the world,” Campsen added.
In October, Campsen will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent Virginia in a ceremony that recognizes National Distinguished Principals from each state.
