VANCOUVER (WAVY) – John Gibson proved why he may have been the best goalie in the American Hockey League. Gibson, recalled from the Norfolk Admirals to Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, made his NHL debut with a shutout 3-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night.
Gibson, making his first start in the NHL, saved all 18 shots on goal.
Gibson was recalled alongside the Admirals’ leading scorer, Devante Smith-Pelly who leads the team with 27 goals this season.
Though it’s not certain how long the two might stay in Anaheim, Norfolk might like its best goalie and best goal-scorer back as soon as possible, considering where they standing in the playoff picture. After Sunday’s 3-2 loss at Hartford, and combined with a Hershey win, the Admirals stand at ninth place in the conference standings.
That means if the playoffs were to start today, Norfolk would be headed home for the postseason.
With six games still to play, there’s time for Norfolk to correct that. The team is at Providence to start a three game road trip on Friday.
