Family seeks answers in 19-year-old’s murder

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – 19-year-old Keshmario “Kesh” Middleton’s body was discovered on Barrison Way early Saturday morning. His family is pleading for someone with information about his death to come forward.

MPO Lonnie Cain with the Virginia Beach Police Department said Middleton had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene when officers arrived around 5 a.m.

Sheila Concitis lives across the street from Barrison Way. She drove past the scene Saturday morning and said she saw a man’s body in the street while police investigated.

“The kids saw it and it was just shocking. Very shocking, because you don’t expect to see that. You’re leaving to go to softball and there’s a body in the road,” said Concitis. “There’s a lot of good people that live around here, working class people. So I don’t – the gun violence – I don’t get it.”

Police have not named any suspects in Middleton’s death. His family hopes to hear something soon.

His mother, Ann Watson, told WAVY.com Middleton was at a party Friday night into Saturday morning. She said he left the party and was on his way home when he was shot.

“How can you leave a party, and there’s other people around, and nobody knows anything?” Watson asked.

“He has a whole family behind him that doesn’t have any answers,” said Sarita Porter-Watson, Middleton’s sister. “We deserve answers.”

Porter-Watson remembers Middleton as a light in the family: “The happiness, the silliness, the playfulness, the joyfulness that he brought to us, it’s just diminished now.”

The family believes someone out there can help them gain closure.

“If there’s any information that anybody can give us, then at least we could have some type of peace, at least some peace,” Watson said.

“It would help all of us, especially his mother. She doesn’t deserve this,” Porter-Watson said. “So if anybody knows anything, we would greatly appreciate if someone would come forward and say something.”

Middleton’s family held a candlelight memorial on Monday at 6 p.m. in the 700 block of Barrison Way, where he died.

Virginia Beach Police were called to investigate Middleton’s death just hours after another homicide a couple blocks away, in the 5900 block of Margate Avenue. Sunday, police arrested Ladarius Stieff and charged him with the homicide of James Earl Jones, 25, of Norfolk. Police say a second person was injured by gunfire in the same incident; he remains in stable condition.

A week before those two most recent shootings, 29-year-old Cyle Strahl was shot and killed in his home on Red Horse Lane, also in the Lake Edward neighborhood.

MPO James Cason told WAVY.com police don’t know that the shootings are related, but said detectives are actively pursuing all leads related to the shootings. Police are also aware of neighbors’ concerns in the Lake Edward neighborhood. Police are remaining vigilant and staying present in the area.
