PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A crash that caused major delays on I-264 West near the Downtown Tunnel Monday afternoon has been cleared, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation tweet.

The crash occurred between South Street and the Frederick Boulevard exit, and Portsmouth Police advised drivers to avoid I-264 West from the tunnel to Exit 5 while the scene was being cleared.

The crash caused traffic congestion and detours for a little longer than an hour. Drivers were asked to use an alternate route by taking Exit 7, Effingham Street, and traveling along High Street to Frederick Boulevard before returning to the Interstate.

Sgt. Pew with Virginia State Police later told the crash occurred at 2:38 p.m. and involved three vehicles.

Around 2:45 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on I-264 West, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation tweet. That crash happened in Norfolk near the Berkley Bridge, but was cleared around 4:20 p.m.
