HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Police say a ‘suspicious item’ was safely detonated Sunday night in a parking lot located in the 1100 block of Big Bethel Road.
Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division said someone called police about the suspicious item around 6:20 p.m. Price said the item turned out to be a safe that had been left unattended in a parking lot at the Hampton Woods Plaza Shopping Center.
No one was around when the safe was found unattended, which is why police said it was being considered suspicious. As a precaution, the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division responded and asked for help from the Newport News Bomb Squad.
Police said the safe was blown up around 9 p.m. by the Bomb Squad, and did not contain anything criminal in nature.
The parking lot was closed off as well as three nearby businesses, and all were able to reopen after the safe was detonated.
