Navy to honor slain Sailor with memorial service

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Navy will hold a memorial service Monday for a Sailor killed in a shooting on USS Mahan at Naval Station Norfolk.

Terri Davis with the Navy said the service will be held at 10 a.m. at Naval Station Norfolk for Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo. The service will not be open to the general public due to limited seating.

Mayo was killed when a civilian truck driver, Jeffrey Savage, tried to get on the ship last week. When Savage was confronted by a petty officer, he gained control of her weapon and fired, hitting Mayo.

Savage was then killed by security forces returning fire. Details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Mayo was a Hagerstown, Md. native and had been stationed at Naval Station Norfolk since May 2011. He was 24.
