NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Elizabeth River Crossings said the westbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel on I-264 will close overnight starting this weekend.
ERC said the tube will close at 8 p.m. Friday, April 4 and re-open at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 5. The same pattern will follow for Saturday night and the following weekend of April 11-12.
ERC spokeswoman, Leila Rice, said jet fan installation for the tunnels new ventilation system will be installed during this closure.
Drivers should plan to take the I-64 High Rise bridge, the midtown tunnel or the Jordan Bridge as alternate routes.
A few on-ramps to I-264 will also close, along with the westbound tube. As early as 7 p.m. each night, ERC said the on-ramp from City Hall onto I-264 West will close, as will the on-ramp from Tidewater Drive onto I-264 West.
Tunnel closure will continue throughout summer 2014, except for holidays or during special events, such as Harborfest or the Azalea Festival.
