BUXTON, N.C. (AP) — The former foundation stones of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse now threatened by erosion should have a new home near the beacon by Memorial Day.

National Park Service spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said Thursday staff will put material between the stones that will keep grass from growing but that’s also soft enough for people to walk on.

The approximately 30 stones were left behind when the lighthouse was moved inland 15 years ago to protect it from erosion. A nonprofit group paid to have the stones engraved with the names of the 83 light keepers.

Dawn Taylor of the Hatteras Island Genealogical and Preservation Society says the stones will be placed in a semicircle.
