NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Mayor Paul Fraim declared April as International Month in Norfolk, and volunteers are getting ready for the Norfolk NATO Festival.

The festival will celebrate the 61st anniversary of recognizing the NATO Command in the city and its 28 Member Nations.

Work is underway to get the floats together for the big Parade of Nations downtown. Youth ambassadors and other volunteers worked together to create the NATO float’s back mural, Italy’s Roman Chariot float, England’s phone booth and bus, and special detailing for the French and Dutch floats.

The festival kicks off with a flag raising at Norfolk Scope Arena and NATO night at the International Tattoo at Scope on Friday April 25. The Parade of Nations starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, and the festival follows at Town Point Park.

And new for 2014:  A Wiener Dog Costume Competition and Strongman Stein Hoist Competition.
