Toddler injured in alleged assault has died

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A toddler injured in what police are investigating as an aggravated assault has died, police confirm.

Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department said the 3-year-old boy was critically injured last Thursday in the 1600 block of Elm Avenue. He underwent emergency surgery, but remained in critical condition until his passing.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will now perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

On Friday, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, 21-year-old Trevon M. Hairston, was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding in connection to the child’s injuries. So far, his charges have not been upgraded, but Holley said that is possible.
