Portsmouth fire rescue

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Two separate incidents at a Portsmouth elementary school had firefighters responding Tuesday morning.

Deputy Chief Mike Stockton with the Portsmouth Fire Department told WAVY.com firefighters were first called to Churchland Elementary School around 9:15 a.m. due to wires down. Wires had reportedly detached from a pole in a fenced-in area at the school.

The wires were secured and students were allowed to go back into the building.

About an hour later, firefighters were called to the school for a report of a gas smell in the kitchen area. Stockton said the gas was secured in the kitchen and the school evacuated.

No injuries were reported in either incident.
