NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 63-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle in Newport News Monday night.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. along Mercury Boulevard near Newmarket Drive. Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said a man driving a 1998 Ford Windstar traveling in the center lane served to the right to avoid colliding with a vehicle in front of him that quickly applied its brakes.

He did not see the pedestrian, identified as Peter Cornetta of Newport News. Cornetta was struck and thrown to a sidewalk. He was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m.

Eley said Cornetta was not crossing at an intersection and was wearing dark clothing.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges are pending against the driver.
