NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Firefighters had to force their way into a home in Norfolk to attack a fire Tuesday morning.

The fire sparked around 8:30 a.m. in the 9200 block of Atwood Avenue. Battalion Chief Julian Williamson with Norfolk Fire and Rescue said crews found smoke coming from the attic of the one-story duplex.

The door was forced open in order for firefighters to get inside. It took less than half an hour to get the fire under control and no one was inside at the time.

One apartment suffered smoke and fire damage and is uninhabitable at this time. Williamson said the apartment did have smoke alarms, but they were not working at the time.

No one was hurt. The cause remains under investigation.
