NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A fugitive is in police custody after a tactical situation in Newport News early Friday morning.

Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said officers went to serve a fugitive warrant in the 1000 block of Berkshire Drive just before 2:30 a.m. The suspect, Ralph Ledford, 36, of the 1000 block of Berkshire Drive, was wanted out of West Point on charges of burglary and assault and battery on a family member.

About an hour later, a tactical call came in, though details were not released on how that came about.

Ledford came out of his home just before 5:30 a.m. but was not compliant, Eley said. Officers then shot him with a bean bag shotgun and he was taken into custody.

Eley said additionally, Ledford’s mother, Beverly Hayes, 59, was charged with obstruction of justice in connection to the arrest of her son.
