PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A 44-year-old Coast Guardsman entered a guilty plea at a court-martial hearing Wednesday for misconduct and assault.
Lt. Wayne Barfield pled guilty to maltreatment; assault; conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman and punitive articles (fraternizations and drunk and disorderly conduct).
He was sentenced to 60 days restriction to Base Elizabeth City, a letter of reprimand and $1,000 forfeiture of pay for 12 months. Additionally, he submitted his request to retire as a chief warrant officer two.
The Coast Guard said Barfield was charged for “allegedly engaging in a broad spectrum of misconduct ranging from assault and battery, inappropriate comments to drunk and disorderly conduct.” The charges came after a month of investigation.
Barfield was formerly assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin and had also been administratively assigned to Marine Safety Unit Savannah and Facilities Engineering Base Elizabeth City.
