PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Detectives have arrested a man after a small child was critically injured in Portsmouth Thursday afternoon.
Around noon, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Elm Avenue to assist medics who were at a home in reference to an unresponsive 3-year-old boy, according to Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department.
Officers were told the boy had been involved in an accident where he fell from steps at the back door of the house.
Holley said the child was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and then to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, where underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition.
Detectives investigated the circumstances of the child’s injuries and no longer believe he fell down stairs. Holley said and investigation into what actually took place is ongoing.
On Friday, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, 21-year-old Trevon M. Hairston, was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding. Hairston is in the custody of the Portsmouth Sherriff’s Office.
WAVY News 10’s Lauren Compton talked to a neighbor off camera, who said she was one of the first to call 9-1-1. The neighbor said Hairston came to her house and told her the child fell and was unresponsive. The neighbor, who is a nurse, tried to revive the child with no success. She said when paramedics arrived, the child was still unresponsive.
