VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A local Girl Scout troop said someone gave them a fake bill for boxes of cookies.
Elementary-school aged girls were duped at the Wal-Mart off Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach on Sunday. A spokeswoman said a volunteer later found out at the bank that someone paid them with a counterfeit $50-dollar bill.
The girls will not have to come up with the lost money.
“It’s truly unfortunate that this happened to them,” said Girl Scouts Spokeswoman Kaitlin Smith. “The girls work really hard and all the proceeds from the cookie program do stay right here with our local Council.”
That troop ends their cookie sales this Sunday. They’ve been raising money for a community project and a trip to D.C.
