HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – The Hampton University men’s basketball team heads to Penn State University for its first round game in the College Basketball Invitational, which starts on Wednesday.
The Pirates (18-12, 13-3 MEAC) fell 83-77 to Coppin State in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC tournament, while the Nittany Lions (15-17, 6-12 Big Ten)lost 63-56 to Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament.
Pirates head coach Ed Joyner doesn’t feel like his team played its best basketball against Coppin State, and believes his team will benefit from playing on the road in a major conference. “We think that it’s good for our kids to go see that atmosphere,” said Joyner on Monday, “To have a chance to play in the postseason, to play a team like Penn state, a Big Ten team, which is probably the best conference in the country, we think it’ll pay dividends for us.
“Hopefully we can go in there and do the things we to do to try and win a ball game, and then hopefully it’ll spring board us through the rest of the tournamnent and then into next year.”
The game will tip off at 7:00 pm.
