CARROLLTON, Va. (WAVY) – Officials have identified the man who was found dead near a brush fire Saturday in Isle of Wight County.
Don Robertson, an Isle of Wight County spokesperson, told WAVY.com 66-year-old Frank Birdwell died while burning leaves at the end of Mallard Cove Lane in Carrollton.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 7 p.m., and discovered Birdwell near what appeared to be an intentional burn pile of yard debris.
A neighbor told WAVY News’ Lauren Compton he rushed to help Birdwell when the fire started. The neighbor told Compton Birdwell was burning a pile of leaves when he collapsed into the fire. The neighbor said he tried to throw water on the flames, but it was too late.
Investigators said the cause of death does not appear to be fire-related, but possibly a medical emergency that happened before Birdwell lost control of the fire. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sheriff’s investigators said there is no indication of criminal activity.
